VisualAid is a resource site of illustrated translations to help healthcare workers communicate better with migrant workers affected by COVID-19.
\n
We were inspired by Sudesna Roy Chowdhury's website, a treasure trove of COVID-19-related translations for healthcare workers. We took that as a starting point of our project and did more field research, spoke to clinicians and nurses at the COVID-19 frontline, brainstormed ideas, prototyped them to eventually come up with VisualAid.
\n
Based on our guerilla research, we think these visual aids are useful at a few places:
\n
\n
At screening and triage, to ask about symptoms, living environment, travel history.
\n
At the wards, to talk about ongoing symptoms, health markers and daily needs.
\n
At community isolation facilities like at Expo, for migrant workers to communicate daily needs and wants, like toiletries, clothes, snacks, games.
\n
At clinics and other healthcare facilities, and any other situation in other healthcare facilities like GP clinics, community care facilities, designated housing, medical posts, purpose-built dorms, mobile FAST teams, etc.
\n
\n
Aaaand we're launching the project today! We started on 17 April, launched on 4 May – from research to concept to launch in just over two weeks. Two pretty intense weeks, I must say. And I'm pretty proud of the end product! We currently have two collections of illustrated translations in Bengali, all downloadable for free. Yes, free! It’s an all-volunteer, not-for-profit, completely ground-up, design for social good project. Just a bunch of designers, illustrators and translators volunteering their time, burning weekday nights and weekends to make this thing and put this out there. To just help out in any way we can, contribute our skills in any way is needed.
\n
But we do see this not as the final thing, but the first step. After all, we've only got translations for Bengali. There's still other translations we need to include, like Tamil, Hindi, Burmese, Chinese, etc. Already, there are requests coming in from healthcare professionals for illustrations and translations in other medical settings. Not forgetting that there's also other vulnerable groups—like say, the elderly living in nursing homes—who might need potentially benefit from this. Lots more field research to do, people to talk to, stakeholders to engage, ideas to brew.
\n
So we believe that there is a lot of potential for illustrated translations in healthcare settings, and the Bengali collection is just the beginning! We responded to the need of the times (i.e. COVID-19), but we do foresee that this can go beyond our current situation, to reach other languages, dialects and groups of patients.
\n
So if you are reading this and see an opportunity that these visual aids might also be useful for your patients and/or beneficiaries, please contact us! We'll love to talk.
\n
Onward, Singapore.
\n
- Jason
\nfor the VisualAid team
"},{"url":"/posts/our-illustration-style/","relativePath":"posts/our-illustration-style.md","relativeDir":"posts","base":"our-illustration-style.md","name":"our-illustration-style","frontmatter":{"title":"Our illustration style","subtitle":"Some principles that help guide the look-and-feel of our illustrations ","date":"2020-05-16T08:24:30.920Z","excerpt":"Our illustration style is about enabling quick recognition and comprehension, not too different from say, traffic signs!","template":"post","seo_img_path":"visualaid_opengraphimage.png"},"html":"
⚡️ TL;DR: The key take away for our illustration style is that our projects are executed/delivered quickly, and that the message conveyed needs to be easily and quickly understood. The illustrations doesn't need to be too refined or too consistent. All it requires is quick recognition and comprehension. By analogy, it's not too different from traffic signs!
\n
As part of our research process in developing the visual aids and illustrated translations, we spoke to many healthcare workers (HCWs) from various hospitals. From those learnings and observations, we came up with a set of principles and considerations that guides the look-and-feel of our illustrations:
\n
Key considerations
\n
\n
Clean and Simple
\nThe illustrations and message conveyed needs to be understood fast. HCWs see a large volume of patients daily, so our visual aids should help to speed up communication. Reduce unnecessary additions to the illustrations to the minimum required to convey the message. The illustrations should not be highly/artistically rendered. The more straight-forward/vanilla the illustrations are, the easier and faster they can be read.
\n
Contrast
\nIllustrations must work in black and white as most medical staff will print in an office printer without colour. Try to avoid using only colour to convey important details - e.g. a red blood drop conveying blood drawing will just look like a water droplet in black and white. After illustrating, switch to black and white view to double-check.
\n
\n
To convey meaning more swiftly, use these techniques:
\n
\n
Context
\nDrawing sugar cubes as white cubes can’t work alone, but drawn with context: next to coffee/candy/cakes will allow the readers to make the reference to those white cubes being sugar.
\n
White space
\nAmple space will allow readers to focus on the important things. Drawing elements too close to each other creates clutter, which makes the reading experience more difficult and time-consuming.
\n
Shapes
\nUse simple but sufficient shapes and lines to convey meaning. Subtract unnecessary elements in the drawings to increase reading/recognition efficiency.
\n
Hierarchy
\nThe fewer elements there are in the scene, the better. Use scale (larger, smaller), tone (dark vs light) for more emphasis.
\n
\n
Mindful about cultural differences and literacy levels
\n
Avoid illustrating concepts based on figures of speech, idioms or metaphors, as these might not carry well over to the cultural context of the migrant workers. Be mindful of using icons, as not all are universally understood.
\n
We found that just drawing out the exact action that they have to do, or sketching out the physical environment is the clearest way. For example, for the illustration conveying \"short of breath\", just show a person panting, instead of a pair of lungs. For diabetes, show sugar instead of medical devices.
\n
Resisting over-design
\n
Designers love to design and in our passion for our work, over-designing is an reflex that we have to curb as much as we can. Keep details to a minimum. The visuals should be simple and immediately easy to understand. Too much detail entails that the viewer will take longer to process the image. It doesn't need the fine details like those in medical/anatomical drawings, even though this is for use in healthcare settings.
\n
These are guiding principles based on the best knowledge we have at the moment, and it may change depending on new information coming in, and also different context/environments. If you have any suggestions and feedback, we welcome it too! Contact us here. 😊
"},{"url":"/posts/prototyping-during-cb/","relativePath":"posts/prototyping-during-cb.md","relativeDir":"posts","base":"prototyping-during-cb.md","name":"prototyping-during-cb","frontmatter":{"title":"Prototyping during CB","subtitle":"Some early shots on our prototypes","date":"2020-05-01T15:43:29.391Z","thumb_img_path":"","content_img_path":"","excerpt":"This was during the strictest of strict period of Circuit Breaker. And with good reasons, because we spoke to healthcare professionals...","template":"post","seo_img_path":"visualaid_opengraphimage.png"},"html":"
As part of our research process for developing the visual aids and illustrated translations, we spoke to many healthcare workers from various hospitals. One key message that kept coming back was how they needed to work fast and efficiently due to the large numbers of patients who they screen through daily. Getting the migrant workers to read long sentences and paragraphs of text also takes time. Some might find it a challenge due to literacy level, even if the text is in their own script font.
\n
So based on these learning points, the kind of translation style we go for is:
\n
\n
Brief/short. Chop long sentences into shorter ones, in active voice. Being short and instructive tends to pair well with the tasks and actions that the medical staff are doing. Short phrases will also work well with the illustrations, making the illustrated translations more modular and applicable to different settings.
\n
Simple. We use simple words, because simple aids comprehension. Instead of \"performing a swab on you\", say \"giving you a swab\".
\n
Clear. Shorten without sacrificing clarity. For the nurses/doctors, being precise about certain terms is important.
\n
Informal. These translations are used in non-formal settings, so there's no need for formalities in speech. We remove unnecessary adjectives, figures of speech, e.g. instead of \"Before we do that, we need to say that...\", just say the thing!
\n
\n
For example:
\n
❌ \"Do you have a cough?\"
\n✅ \"Cough?\"
\n
❌ \"Keep your head in an upright position\"
\n✅ \"Keep your head upright.\"
\n
❌ \"We are going to perform a throat and nasal swab on you.
